Many people like to eat pineapple, either as a sweet snack between meals or in the form of culinary treats like a Hawaiian pizza.
But how about dogs? Can dogs eat pineapples or should you rather not share the fruit with your four-legged friend? Find the answer to this question in the following.
Fruit should be an integral part of every human's diet. After all, fruit is rich in vitamins and other valuable nutrients that are important for our health. However, dogs have completely different nutritional needs than humans. Their diet should mainly consist of animal ingredients. Plant-based food, on the other hand, should only make up a small proportion.
Some foods that humans can safely consume are actually even toxic for dogs. In contrast to grapes, this does not apply to pineapples. It is therefore usually absolutely fine if you let your dog have a piece of pineapple every now and again.
Pineapples are packed with vitamins and minerals. These include potassium, calcium and magnesium as well as vitamin C, various B vitamins and beta-carotene. Furthermore, with around 50 calories per 100 grams, the pineapple is a low-calorie snack that figure-conscious two- and four-legged friends can enjoy guilt-free.
Pineapple also contains bromelain, which breaks down proteins and thus aids digestion. For all its positive qualities, you shouldn't let your dog eat too much of it, as the fruit also contains a lot of fruit acid. This can put a strain on the four-legged friend's stomach. If you give your dog a small piece of pineapple every now and then, the fruit acid is usually not a problem.
Although pineapples are generally not harmful to dogs, it is very important that you only feed your four-legged friend ripe fruit. Otherwise, your dog may get stomach cramps and diarrhoea.
You can recognize a ripe pineapple by its intense fruity smell and the fact that its leaves can be pulled off without much effort.
In theory, nothing speaks against canned fruit. However, there is not only pineapple, but also a lot of sugar in the cans. For the sake of your dog's health, you should therefore refrain from letting your four-legged friend eat canned pineapple.
As you can see, pineapples are generally suitable for dogs to eat. However, it is important that the fruit is ripe. In addition, due to the fruit acid contained in pineapples, you should not overdo the amount to avoid problems with your dog's stomach. Regardless of this, fruit alone is of course not enough to supply your four-legged friend with all the nutrients they need.
For a balanced diet, you definitely need high-quality dog food, such as the varieties you can find in the Bellfor range, for example. In addition to wet and dry food, we also offer a large selection of healthy dog treats, that your dog will probably prefer to eating pineapple anyway.
